I figured, a book this size (and price!) needs a thread of its own.

So my copy of Carmine arrived today. First impressions: "I paid for the packaging." It's definitely well packaged, but the extras weren't all that worth it. The digital copy has wallpaper version of the images from the book, ranging from 800 x 600 to 1280 x 1024! ~_~ There are two posters, Rei and Asuka, long and body sized. They're new, but the pictures look pretty generic if you ask me. I actually though I saw one inside the book.

Packaging first:


The book comes in a hard outer casing. Really nice looking aesthetically. The book itself is larger than A4 (whatever that next size is) and hard cover. Contents were a bit disappointing because at least a third of it is Evangelion, and images that were in Die Sterne as well... But there's .hack GU, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, FLCL, Gunbuster 2, a couple from Nadia Secret of Blue Water, and... a few original drawings. Kind of got carried away with the picture taking...




Personally, this book is asking a lot at a price tag of ￥ 13,650. It's worth maybe half that with the amount of re-prints from his previous publications, and previous Gainax publications. It's looks great, it's really over the top in presentation (which is why that's what I felt I paid for) but lacking as far as content goes. There is one awesome Evangelion picture that I hadn't seen before, with Asuka and Rei in ballerina clothes. A couple of his original ones are beautiful. And there was an awesome pic of Haruka from FLCL that I'd only seen as a tiny picture. Oh, and the one with all the Gainax girls on motor bikes looks great. So... it was good, but not $150 good

Sadamoto is good in my opinion but it's mostly Evangelion glam.
I'm not a big enough fan to drop 150 bucks on one of his releases.

Yeah that's a tad expensive for what you get.

Impressive presentation on that set, I was all for it (as an Eva fan) until I scanned your photos and realised just how many of the pieces I already have/have seen elsewhere.

I just received my limited edition, and I must say that I was completely satisifed. The book's presentation is top-notch, the pictures are beautiful too, and I don't really mind the fact that he used some of his old works for it since I haven't bought Der Mond or any other Eva artbook before this one. The price is indeed high, but if you like Sadamoto's work you won't be disappointed.

Price is stiff, but I like the overall presentation. Might pick it someday if I get this for a decent price.

Might get it too, if I can find it reasonably priced, since the presentation is so good. 'If' being the word.
