Prepping for a move...

Postby Siye » May 7th, 2010, 5:26 am

I haven't "really" moved in almost ten years.

I have a massive amount of books and that is becoming massively heavy to pack and move... but I expected the hassle.

However, statues and to a much lesser extent figures are much more work than I expected.

I've displayed most of my statues.. and for most I have the original boxes.. but reboxing has been a load of work and a huge pain. Not to mention how BIG the boxes are. Figures are much lighter and less complicated (lucky I kept most of em boxed) but these two kinds of goods are definitely not easy to move.

Anyone do a big move with their collections? How did you make the packing process go faster? How many of you just gave up and started chucking loose figures into a box?

Did it last week, check out my collection thread (scroll down to the middle of current page). I had some really fragile expensive items made by Master Replicas, Gentle Giant, Kotobukiya, Medicom and Hot Toys, and had no problems in moving them, not one item broken or damaged. I used bubble bags, the ones with big bubbles and packed everything carefully and put them in bags. Sometimes I used the original boxes. I had about 7 big bags with collectibles and 9 big bags with CD's. The next step is to move our family library which contains about 2500 books.

My Hubby and I recently moved as well when we purchased a house last October. eWe hired movers for the furniture and books since there was no way we could move it all ourselves. For loose figures, I packaged them in sandwich bags and then packed those into plastic shoe box containers. Those I then packaged into boxes. My Hubby packed his loose Transformers in bubble wrap, labeled them and stored them into a plastic storage tub. Most of my larger figures were still in their packaging since I hated dusting figures. Those I packed into very large moving boxes I was able to get from my father. We moved the figures ourselves since our house was close to our apartment.

-Blister and clamshell packed figures were put in bags together.
-Most of the box figures were put in boxes with bubble wrap for padding.
-My statues I took in the back of the car personally. For safety.
-Books are heavy but much easier to pack. Managed to pack them into two boxes.

Moving is a pain, especially if you haven't done so in a while. All the accumulated items.
It's much easier if you have the liberty to do it over a period (month or week) than a single day as I have had in the past.

I moved from one house to a rental house then to the house I'm living in now with 500+ anime figures and it was a JOB packing them all up. Any larger ones that didn't have their boxes I bubble wrapped and boxed up. Smaller gashapons I wrapped in tissue paper & put in plastic baggies. All of my larger resin kits went in the back of the car, like Onegai said, for safety reasons. There is just no way I could have packed those well enough for me to feel safe. Since I had original boxes for most those were easy. Re-boxed them and had a hell of a time getting them all to fit like a puzzle into large cardboard boxes.

There's really not a whole lot you can do to make it go quicker. Once I finally got settled in here that was when I sold almost all of them and now my collection stays relatively small. I would have never had the room here to display them all correctly, they would have been all over the house lol.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm pretty much done packing my books insto smaller boxes but I haven't touched my figures yet. Luckily most of them are still boxed and I only have 15 or so. The statues though.. damn what a pain. I have boxes for MOST of them. But they're HUGE. A statue is usually a medium to large box on its own and I have to be very careful when stacking to make sure they are on the top since they weigh relatively little in comparison to their size.

Well best of luck to me I suppose.
