Anime 2009 Winter/Spring TV Season

Postby Arcturus » February 3rd, 2009, 9:36 pm

I have kinda fallen behind on the new season. Just curious about the new stuff and what you'll have thought about the new season.

Still watching the new episodes of Toradora! since it is continuing into the new season. Thought the new second OP and END paled before the first OP and END. Thought the story is still engaging and the animation is still very good.

Haven't finished Hyakko yet, though I have liked it very much.

For the new season I saw the first episode of Chrome Shelled Regios. Seems to go by its translated title and/or its Japanese title, depending on the group.
It seems interesting and the animation is pleasant, though there is going to be a lot of backstory needed to be told.

There is a lot of the new season out there, so what have you'll seen.
Tokyo Central to Shirow One, we have you at T-minus 4 mins and counting.
Shirow One to Tokyo Central we have a problem.
Tokyo Central to Shirow One, that is affirmative, have Shirow One on hold count.

These are the shows I am watching currently and I also rated them:

Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's 7.5/10 (Epic card game now on wheels)
Gundam 00 8.7/10 (I'm a Gundam fan, what can I say?)
To aru Majutsu no Index - 7.5/10 (pretty good shounen show)
ToraDora! 8/10 (Not my type of series but it's very fun to watch)
Minami-ke Okaeri - 8.5/10 (So much better than that crap that Okawari was)
Maria Holic - 7/10 (Funny series but not too funny)
RideBack - 8.5/10 (i luvs this show so far, don't let the character design turn you off)
White Album - 5/10 (so far it's meh)
Kuroshitsuji - 7/10 (eh, it's pretty average for now. Haven't caught up with the latest eps)
Clannad: After Story 7/10 (Not my type of show but it's worth the watch)
Tales of the Abyss 6/10 (so boring. It's based on the game but there's hardly any fighting involved)
Jigoku Shoujo: Mitsuganae 8/10 (No matter how terrible the show can be at times, I <3 Enma Ai lulz)

Asu no Yoichi - 3/10 (dropped this one. Boring characters, boring plot >_>)

The ratings aren't final of course.

I still haven't watched Regios due to laziness and the fact that I'm watching Burst Angel right now. I also dropped Hyakko a while ago, something about it didn't appeal to me.

For Spring, the new shows I'm going to try out are:
Full Metal Alchemist
07 Ghost
Shangri-La
Tears to Tiara
Valkyria Chronicles
Asura Cryin'
Hatsukoi Limited
Pandora Hearts
Phantom

Apparently, they're going to have a live-action Higurashi movie o_0.

Hmm, I definitely want to follow the new FMA and hopefully get the R2s of the video release (I'm really hoping for a Blu Ray release, but I'll go for dvds if that's all they have.) The only way I won't get those is if I have to cut drastically on spending (work's been stressful the past couple months thanks to lay offs. :pata: )

Hubby has the Valkyrie Chronicles PS3 game and really liked, so I might check that out as well. Heh, and I'm a bit interested in Queen's Blade. :doki:

Apparently that is only going to be a reshowing of the first season.

Damn wtf! That better not be true.

On a side note, I read on another forum that Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu will have a season 2... God, watching through that was hard. Now they're making season 2???

Was it really that hard? I still have that to start watching. The concept sounded nice and the samples of animation didn't look too bad either.

It was hard to watch at times. I lose interest pretty quickly in some anime series but luckily this was on 12 or 13 (I forgot) episodes. At first I thought I was going to like it but towards the end, my opinion changed.

Haruka and Yuuko are relatively boring characters imo. The other characters aren't that great either. I did like Haruka's father though. lol. Haruka is cute and is one of them shy girls but there's really nothing much about her. She's secretly a clumsy otaku zomg. Yuuko is our typical male main character who isn't physically strong and is not very good with girls.

To me, as long as an anime has characters you can enjoy, it's watchable despite having a bad setting or plot. But Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu was just bleh~. Many parts of the anime did have very typical fanservice or moments like zomg-whoops-i-fell-on-a-girl-accidentally-and-someone-walked-in moments. Not exactly original, nothing deep in plot, typical characters, etc... That's why it was hard to watch for me. It's not a bad series though. I'd probably rate it 4/10 lol. Everything felt too unoriginal by the end of the series.

I'm watching:
Chrome Shelled Regios
Maria-sama ga Miteru
Rideback

Rideback has to be my favourite for this season. It's like motorcycles with arms.

Well, I've really only watched two shows from the new spring season. Funimation is doing live streaming of the new FMA series with subtitles the day after it airs in Japan. I've seen one episode so far and I must say it looks to live up to the previous series and the manga very well. I'm looking forward to buying it on Blu Ray this summer.

I also checked out the first episode of Queen's Blade, and it looks to be one of the gratuitous series that will be fun to watch. Much like Ikki Tousen was for me, it may not be a terribly intelligent series, but it's still an amusing one. I will warn you though, the show looks to be a tad disturbing in ways.
Spoiler:
Especially after seeing the jelly girl squeeze acid from her breasts...

I think I might get this series as well on BR disks since I'm not getting much from Region 1 companies at the moment. Sadly, with the exception of Funimation and Nozomi, it looks like most Region 1 anime companies are in desperate trouble. Even Bandai has virtually nothing coming out now; and their releases are suffering numerous delays that I'm guessing are due to lack of staff. I don't think we'll see many of these shows in Region 1.
